Over 4,000 Participants in over 100 Countries Earn Hurricane Electric’s Highest IPv6 Certification Distinction

World’s Largest IPv6 backbone continues leadership in preparing network engineers, CIOs and others for the deployment of next-generation Internet connectivity

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Hurricane Electric, the world’s largest IPv6-native Internet backbone and leading colocation provider, today announced that the company’s IPv6 certification program has certified 4,000 IPv6 Sages in 100 countries. Sage is the highest level of IPv6 certification.

“We are excited that so many network administrators, corporate CIOs and others worldwide have opted to gain certification at the highest level,” said Mike Leber, Hurricane Electric’s president. “Hurricane Electric is committed to providing not only the best global IPv6 network, but also the tools that enable a smooth transition to IPv6.”

Hurricane Electric’s IPv6 certification program affirms that participants have:

  • established IPv6 connectivity
  • configured IPv6 on web and email servers
  • configured forward IPv6 DNS
  • configured reverse IPv6 DNS (for email server only)
  • assigned IPv6 addresses to name servers that can respond to IPv6 queries
  • passed a test of IPv6 concepts

With the approach of the World IPv6 Launch on June 6, 2012, it is imperative that IT operators and network administrators prepare for the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 and have the tools to enable IPv6 on their company’s network. During the World IPv6 Launch (whose motto is “This Time it is for Real”), major telecommunications companies like AT&T, Cisco and Google will permanently enable IPv6 services.

Enterprises that delay the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 will eventually experience connectivity-related issues and possible financial losses as the world moves to IPv6. Despite the effort required to transition to IPv6, IPv6 has tremendous long-term benefits and the ROI is strong now. According to a US Commerce Department study, ongoing benefits to the global economy of $10 billion/year will result from IPv6 adoption.

An IPv6 leader for over a decade, Hurricane Electric first deployed IPv6 on its global backbone in 2001. Hurricane Electric’s global Internet backbone is one of the few that is IPv6-native and does not rely on internal tunnels for IPv6 connectivity. IPv6 is offered as a core service and every customer is provided IPv6 connectivity as well as classic IPv4 connectivity. Hurricane Electric connects to more than 1,600 associated IPv6 backbones.
