Old Age Security untouched until 2020, Flaherty says

Canadians won't see changes to Old Age Security until at least 2020, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Friday.

That means Canadians 57 and older should be able to expect to get the same benefits as seniors collecting them now.

The government has said any changes wouldn't affect anyone now collecting OAS, but hadn't given a specific date for when it expected the program to see cuts.

"This is not for tomorrow morning," Flaherty said in Oshawa, Ont., at an event with Conservative MP Colin Carrie.

"This is for 2020, 2025, so that people who are middle-aged and younger today, like Colin and not me, can be assured that they will have the social programs, properly funded, fiscally responsible. They will be here for them in the future."

Flaherty said the plan will be outlined over more than one budget.

That timeline would put the government well past the next federal election, which is in 2015, and possibly the election after that.

Liberal finance critic Scott Brison said the government is manufacturing a crisis to attack Canada's most vulnerable citizens, low-income seniors.

"It’s nuts. It makes no sense from a public policy perspective. If there were a crisis, there are other ways that you would act that would not be as regressive," Brison said.

Brison said 40 per cent of Canadians getting OAS make less than $20,000 a year and more than half make less than $25,000 per year.

Changes could also affect the poorest seniors who get the Guaranteed Income Supplement, because they have to qualify for OAS to get the GIS, he said.

NDP deputy seniors critic Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe said the government still hasn't said what measures it will take to change the program.

"It's been weeks that we've been asking the same questions," she said.

"Are you going to touch the age at which people can access Old Age Security, yes or no? It's a very simple question."

MPs and MPPs should get the same old age pensions everyone ELSE is forced to live with, under the poverty line. That would change the government''s tune in no time....doh....

These MPs should cut their pensions first before they touch the general publics.

Maybe they could take those old age pensioners and give them free tickets to the air show so they could see the spanking new Canadian F-35s fly by. Or stick then in the spanking new jails when the seniors steal for food. Both are good as there's no other choice, hmmmm.

Flaherty and MacKay have billions of money for F35 jets that they will use by cutting pen sions.

I do not believe Flaherty about the pensions

2020 huh? Well, that buys us some time to boot the CONS out and hopefully keep them out! When will Canadians learn that these guys are dangerous to us.

It is true that the O.A.S.at 65 is definitely sustainable, there have been enough reports from credible sources.. It is also true that it most effects people with lower incomes and no work pensions. It is also true that those with money are not effected i.e. Harper, Flaherty and friends. It is also true that they cut corporate taxes. It is fairly easy to see where these guys line up. Lets make sure these clowns pay at the next election if they follow through with this plan.

Have you ever heard a politician answer a yes or no question with a yes or no?

So the government is attacking low income seniors as per Scott Brison. Throw in a few commonly known facts with the statement and everybody will beieve he is champion of the poor. I may be affected by this but believe it's what makes us different from Greece...we are responsible people. There are only two sure things in life....this guys salary and his pension. I'm sure he is earning every cent of both with attacks like these.

This one takes the cake. It's bad enough to pay taxes on everything tangiable product. Why am I paying taxes toward a benefit I will never recieve?
    • TKO 3 months ago
OAS is not compensation for paying taxes. Even people who never pay Canadian taxes are eligible. They only have to live in Canada to qualify. That's why we have to keep it low so tax payers can afford to pay for this benefit.

KD, using your logic, then why should I pay school taxes for your kids when I have no kids? Why should my taxes pay for your pediatricians or hospital maternity wards, then? Those are benefits that I pay for and will never receive. This is how a social system works - you cannot pick and chose only what benefits you.
    • KD 2 months ago
Hugh I appreciate your point and not to be-labour the point, but to pay taxes for school whether I have children or not is fine because it allows for the option, Maternity wards for babies, great you never know! EI insurance for the unemployed or the lazy - sure! I don't need it but, These things exist and are AVAILABLE to everyone should they ever need it. Old Age Security will not EXIST when I, or anyone of my age bracket reach the eliable age to receive the benefit. That is a "rip-off".

A more logical solution would be to maintain the payable benefit for those who will retire and earn less than " X"amount of dollars and discontinue the benefit for retirees over X amount of dollars. Why should "well-to-do retirees" receive a meaningles benefit, while future retirees of "lesser means" currently pay into the OAS (via taxes) and then go without ??

It is a small but continuous example of the older generations leveraging their needs against the needs of the younger generations. That is not equality.

Boomers left behind them a country with destroyed infrastructures, a national debt that is unsustainable, and they continue to ask the next generations to pay for them !!! People used to work 30 years and live 10 years on retirement. Now, it's 25 at work, and 25-30 on retirement, does anyone realize that it does not make any sense ?

How old are you and how many years you've been working? Have you ever collect unemplayment insurance? Than how about those work their whole life and never collect a dime. Insurance is insurance. How would you like to pay car insurance for 30 years and when you need to claim it they tell you because there are too many car accidents therefore they are not going to pay you. Will you go for that,Idiot.

      You are totally clueless, Fred!
