Obama says no quick fixes to energy squeeze, derides Republican drilling plan as a gimmick

By Anne Gearan, The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama says there is no easy answer to the problem of rising energy prices and he's dismissing Republican solutions as little more than gimmicks.

"We know there's no silver bullet that will bring down gas prices or reduce our dependence on foreign oil overnight," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address. "But what we can do is get our priorities straight and make a sustained, serious effort to tackle this problem."

Oil prices are approaching last year's highs as tensions increase over Iran's nuclear program. The rise pushed gasoline prices Friday to a national average of $3.65 a gallon, the highest ever for this time of year. A spike in gas prices is normal in spring, but it came earlier than usual this year in large part because of world fears that the growing confrontation with Iran will crimp oil supplies. Iran is the world's third-largest crude supplier.

Rising oil prices weigh on the economy, pushing leisure and business travel costs higher. Every 1-cent increase in the price of gasoline costs the economy $1.4 billon, analysts say.

Obama said Republicans have one answer to the oil pinch: drill.

"You know that's not a plan, especially since we're already drilling," Obama said, echoing his remarks earlier in the week. "It's a bumper sticker."

Obama is pushing what he calls an "all-of-the-above" approach to the problem of limited energy resources, meaning an attempt to seek out alternative energy sources while reducing consumption of traditional fuels.

In the Republican address, Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison blamed the rise in gasoline prices partly on the Obama administration, which she said has blocked some potential new sources of oil and gas.

"We can't slow down global demand for oil and gas, but we can do a lot more here at home to assure that we have the energy we need and to halt skyrocketing costs," she said. "President Obama's policy has resulted in an unprecedented slowdown in new exploration and production of oil and gas."

For all the political claims, economists say there's not much a president of either party can do about gasoline prices. Certainly not in the short term. But it's clear that people are concerned — a new Associated Press-GfK poll says 7 in 10 Americans find the issue deeply important — so it's sure to be a political issue through the summer.

The price of gasoline, which is made from crude oil, has soared with oil prices. The national average jumped by nearly 12 cents per gallon in a week, with state averages above $4 per gallon in California, Alaska and Hawaii.

At $3.65 per gallon, gasoline is still below last year's high of $3.98 and the record $4.11 set in 2008.

He cancels the pipeline from Canada and then says that he's doing everything possible. Our oil infrastructure is aging and there hasn't been a new refinery built since the 1970's. Make the oil companies re-invest rather than stacking up record profits every year.

You are so right. How is it that so many people do not understand? The BS is overwhelming.

Misinformation flying everywhere, Idealists trying to force their narrow views on us all... so much noise... it's deafening... The delay of the Keystone XL pipeline blew me away... Wow... Some rational would help..... Hopefully some sanity will prevail after the US elections.. Stop listening to over-the-hill actors...

And, Donald, you believe that the corporo-fascists are not spinning their propaganda in order to shove this down our throats? Or are you just a shill for big oil too?

too bad Obama can't convert endless rambling speeches into Oil. All this guy has done has been talk, talk, talk, and his speeches and his delivery all sound the same. Meanwhile, his Attorney General hasn't even indicted a single Wall Street shyster after the biggest ripoff in history.
It's unbelievable that the execs who masterminded the sub prime loan scam have skated away with billions, and then been bailed out to boot.
The only thing Obama has going for him is that the Republicans talk and act like they've just stumbled out of a Benny Hinn Revival Healing Circus Tent.

Mud, if you ask me, you are thinking very clearly.

Quickest fix for energy squeeze is to switch from Gasoline to Diesel. Diesel engines use about 30% less fuel, and if all cars, SUV's, and light trucks used this it would go a very long way to solve our supply problems. It is true that a diesel engine costs $1500 to $2000 more but the average user will save about $750 a year in fuel costs. The costs of Diesel currently is about the same as gasoline but it requires less processing and should be cheaper. Although encouraging Diesel would seem to be a no-brainer, the Feds are charging an 6 cents a gallon more in tax for diesel oil. Only in America do we continually shoot ourselves in the foot.

Up until the last generation of gas engines, I would have agreed with you D, 100%. It's true Diesel should be cheaper as it takes less refining, but the newer gas motors are nearly matching Diesel in mpg and they are cheaper to make and buy. Ironically the newer gas motors use some of the technology Diesel has had for years, i.e., high pressure rail injection.. If you plan on putting a ton of miles on a vehicle, I'd still consider Diesel for it's proven durability, or if you have towing needs.. The Diesel torque curve is ideal.

Agree with Donald. Also, given the molecular composition of crude, you get certain proportions of gasoline, diesel, and about another dozen products. While it is possible alter these proportions (e.g., refine more diesel and less gasoline out of a given barrel of crude), the costs of doing so would sky-rocket, wiping out diesel's advantages.
    • DDM 2 months ago
Donald, I agree with you 100% up to the point where you say that the improvements in gasoline engines has allowed then to match diesel engines in millage. The newer Diesel engines have also been developing and have been maintaining their advantage. As proof I will give you the 2012 Audi A3 with 2.0 L engines. US Department of Energy at their web sight www.fueleconomy.gov allows for a side by side comparison of this car with both Diesel and Gasoline engines. The results show the 29.6% better millage with the Diesel engine.

It seems the United States is only interested in energy planning when gasoline prices approach $4 per gallon. Otherwise, it quickly becomes a non-issue, and heads go back into the sand. Obama is correct, there is no quick fix. North America has plenty of oil reserves, now is the time to open up domestic production and get it online. One of Obama's election platforms was to make the U.S. energy independent. Sorry, but solar panels and windmills are not the answer. Instead, it is the same old same old, exactly the same situation in 1974 and the same talk. After nearly 38 years, the U.S.
is still apparently being held hostage imported crude. Once the current situation is resolved, they will be back to such important issues as gay marriage, policing childrens lunches, and the next end of the world as we know it environmental catastrophe.
    • DDM 2 months ago
I like your post except if you take out Canadian Oil we have a severe shortage of oil reserves. The only energy source we have an excess of is COAL but for environmental reasons can not use it.
    • Economics is a form of br ... 2 months ago
And, D, Mexican oil production is also in decline, which makes the US situation even worse.

kind of wondering......they say there is a risk premium in oil price because of the situation in iran

last year they say there is a risk premium because of lybia

the year before there was a risk premium because of iran, ect ect

when do these risk premiums ever come off? they seem to add them every year but never remove them

i think it all the quantive easing the federal government and federal banks around the world have done
over the last several years. our money has been so devalued over that time and prices of all we need
has increased accordingly, however wages have not.

if gold was trading in the $400 range some years ago and now trades in $1700 range, what does that tell
you? is gold really that much more valueable? or is it that the dollar in which it is traded is of so little value?
probably a combanation of the two.

i think if this is the case with gold it probably is the case with oil (and by extention gas and diesel)as well.

Your a wise one Happyone... I agree with you, the money thrown out there since 2008 by the 'Economy Engineers' is the main reason Oil is up, and up, and up, and it will take time for the adjustments to work through the economy into our hands. Meanwhile we all lose purchasing power.

Yup - no quick fixes which is why we need to be proactive - it can get alot worse if peak oil theory has any merit. Existing policies or lack thereof has entire continent shutting in huge portions of our natural gas. Energy at a third of the energy cost SHUT IN! We have too much unusable energy that they literally cannot sell. Policies have done very little to support infrastructure required to make the transition to allow us to use nat gas as alternative. Hellooooooo! Anybody home?? If it wasnt so sad it would be funny.

It is indeed a great shame that Barrak Hussein Obama ran on a ticket for CHANGE. CHANGE FROM WHAT??? Bad to worse? From frying pan to fire! OR from one lie to the next!!! Now when his #$%$ is on the line, Obama comes up with exactly the opposite of the platform he ran on, ie that CHANGE cannot be brought about by the Republicans/GOP. He decries the drilling plan of the Republicans. He is frightened of loosing his re-election. The color of one's skin has nothing to do with his leadership qualities. His demogoguery skills are not going to stand him in good stead this time around. He knows he has achieved little and has failed MISERABLY. Using the white house as a SCHOOL will not lead a prosperous nation USA to greater heights/glory. CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT FACTOR IN OUR LIVES, AND SOME ONE ELSE HAS TO BE GIVEN THIS OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD THIS GREAT NATION. Enough is enough!!!

This "President" is so full of s4!t. The Left-wing news media completely support him. They ignore all of the lies and half-truths.
The Obama administration has caused me to lose all respect for the United States.
If this administration had puposely caused the destruction of the economy they couldn't have done a better job.
And most, not all, Republicans aren't much better.

How much longer are the American people going to put up with this nonsense? If they're going to do something about it they'd better move soon or it'll be too late. The police departments all around the country are getting armoured cars, drones from the military suppliers etc. The Elite are readying themselves for any uprising. It'll make Libya and Syria look small in comparison when the explosion finally happens.
Don't expect the military to help; all officers above captain have been vetted.

The dirty sludge from Keystone is not destined for domestic use in the US anyway. It will be exported once refined. And Canada only has this stuff to export because Canada too imports oil from the MIddle East. Why are the hypocrites in the Republican party (and here) not talking about that?
  • DDM  •  2 months ago
True! There is no quick fix in the short term. The US is shot of virtually all energy sources. Coal is the one energy source that we have in abundance but it is very dirty and polluting to burn. Theoretically it is possible to convert convention coal into a Usable Energy Source with equal generating equal or less pollution than Natural Gas which tends to be the standard. Yes it will take a Research Effort of enormous proportion and 10 to 15 years of development for anything positive to emerge. It's time for our politicians to think long term and recognize that in the long term the development of COAL (Which we have an Enormous Supply of) is our best chance of energy security. The project is too big for private industry and would have to be funded by the government.

Canada has the second largest reserves in the world, is one of the most stable and educated nations on earth, yet we do business with Saudi and other countries that hate us and turn down a steady source of oil. I have to think that a pipeline is a lot safer than tankers anyday.
What insanity. Now China is courting Canada to buy their oil.
    Wow
