Shares of JPMorgan closed down 3.66% on about 47.2 million shares traded. The stock was one of the biggest decliners on the NYSE. The company’s first-quarter earnings fell 20 percent. The bank reported net income of $4.9 billion for the first quarter; this was down from $6.1 billion in the same period a year earlier.

Shares of Biogen Idec Inc. closed down 4.65% on about 2.7 million shares traded. The stock was one of the biggest decliners on the NASDAQ. The company and its partner Swedish Orphan Biovitrum announced positive results for Eloctate, their experimental hemophilia A drug. In a late-stage study, the blood-clotting drug "was generally well-tolerated, and no inhibitors (interfering antibodies) were detected," the companies said in a statement.

Shares of Canadian Solar Inc. closed down 6.33% on about 7.2 million shares traded. The stock was one of the biggest decliners on the NASDAQ. Earlier this month the company received a $46 million loan from Manulife Financial Corp. for its Mighty project in Ontario. The 10-megawatt solar farm is expected to begin producing power in the second quarter, Guelph, Ontario-based Canadian Solar said today in a statement.

Herbalife closed down nearly 14% this past Friday after it was revealed that the Justice Department and the FBI have opened an investigation of Los Angeles nutritional products company. Critics have been saying the company is operating an illegal pyramid scheme.
