Gas prices: Ontario cities fuel biggest weekly gain of 2024

This week, Statistics Canada flagged a year-over-year rise in gas prices in its latest inflation reading. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke, File)

Gas prices have booked their biggest weekly gain of 2024, rising an average of 5.9 cents per litre of regular fuel across Canada between March 14 and March 21.

According to the data firm Kalibrate, the nationwide average price hit $1.657 per litre. Peterborough, Ont. saw the biggest seven-day increase, with prices rising 18.2 cents per litre. It was a similar story in the rest of Ontario, with prices increasing roughly nine cents throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

Calgary was among the few cities to see discounts at the pumps. Prices fell 2.2 cents per litre to $1.457.

This week, Statistics Canada flagged a year-over-year rise in gas prices in its latest inflation reading. The agency says higher prices offset savings on groceries and the cost of cellular services and internet access.

On Thursday, gas station and convenience store giant Alimentation Couche-Tard (ATD.TO) said its U.S. fuel profits fell in its latest quarter as thrifty consumers spend less in its stores. Most of Couche-Tard's nearly 17,000 locations are in the U.S. (~7,000). In Canada, the company has about 2,000 locations.

President and CEO Brian Hannasch warned investors that lower-income consumers are spending less, including on salty snacks and beverages.

"We can look geographically and see that where we've got lower-income consumers, our results are worse and where we've got higher-income consumers, the results are pretty stable," he on a conference call with analysts on Thursday.
