Cross-border shopping by the numbers

Canadians appear to be doing more shopping in the United States.

The number of same-day trips they made by automobile rose 16 per cent in 2011 from the year before. However, the 28 million same-day car trips Canadians made to the U.S. in 2011 pales in comparison with the nearly 60 million made in 1991.

Other evidence of increased cross-border shopping by Canadians comes from sales tax data in the U.S.

Erie County, which borders Canada and includes Buffalo, N.Y., set a record last year for sales tax receipts, which were up 4.5 per cent from 2010. Cross-border shopping was the main reason mentioned by county officials for that increase.

When cross-border shopping by Canadians goes up, it's often attributed to growing strength of the loonie. That was certainly the case in the late 1980s and early '90s, when the Canadian dollar rose 21 per cent and same-day automobile trips more than doubled.

However, when the Canadian dollar made its huge run beginning in 2002 and zoomed past parity in 2007, same-day trips by Canadians showed only a slight increase.

"The close relationship between the exchange rate and same-day auto trips from 1986 to 2001 weakened substantially as border security tightened following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and has not been re-established since," according to a 2007 Statistics Canada study.

The combination of currency movements and increased security did cut in half the amount of cross-border shopping by Americans in Canada, according to the StatsCan study.

Statistics Canada uses same-day automobile trips as its main measure of cross-border shopping, but does note that some of those trips are for other purposes.

Here are more figures on cross-border shopping.

Ever shopped at Bebe or Claires? They both have Canadian and USA prices on the tickets...It reads Canada 29.99 USA 22.99...c'mon! I refuse to shop there until they get their prices on par!

I do as little shopping here as possible. We go over regularily to stock up or shop on line. I am sick of being picked clean by taxes over here. Once hubby retires we are gone. I loved Canada once but if you are a senior it is all most impossible to live here.

Gas is almost 50% higher in Canada than across the border in the USA.That probably accounts for a fair portion of those same day crossings.

Simple explanation to this is the advent of the internet. People don't bother to cross the border with its lineups and never ending questions anymore, they have items shipped to them directly. That's the big difference between 1991 and 2012.

Anything to escape Ontario's taxes, Eco-fees, ridiculous booze cost & gas prices.

Be warned retailers.....get your prices in line or the trend will continue. Why buy any large dollar ticket items in Canada?

Shop online, why not? don't need a passport and wait in line to go through customs.

CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP stupid Canadians. Take your money out of this country and give it to the Country that causes a World Wide Depression, smart. Complain that you have no money and no work, yet business have to close because you don't shop there. Have you seen Windsor, Niagara Falls what "S" holes because the people who live there shop over the boarder. Don't blame the retailer, blame the landlords, blame the tax man, blame the gas man, the $80 gas man. We are not rolling around in you money at night we are just collecting tzx dollars and giving them in to pay for your kids schooling, your roads, and your health care. Don't want to live in the Best Country in the world, it may cost more but it worth it then get out and quit sucking the system dry with your greedy wants. No one buys Canadian because we got sold down the river by the US and now we buy cheap crap made in China made by a small child and still we bitch about the price. Made in Canada costs as someone wants to make a liveable salary so they can enjoy their Country. $70 for a garbage man is nuts, complain about that! Traders!!

That's all fine and good, oh when you get sick please go the States and use their Medical system to get better, oh you have to pay for it though not like here in Canada. And if you have kids take them out of our schools as the taxes are paying for that also, which you are taking out of this country. Oh and the roads you drive on to and from your Canadian paid job ( if you have one) and from your trailer park to the states is also paid for by the taxes. The system in Canada is not perfect but you give up your right to judge it as you don't support it. Thanks for the spelling tip Traitor!

Maybe Canada should lower their prices! Why would I pay 30% more for something when I can drive to the US and get it for less. I dont give a crap about the Canada that is only interested in constantly gouging me!
