Facebook’s got a reputation problem: Harris poll

Nearly 850 million people use Facebook each month and roughly 480 million people use it every day. With a user rate like that and an upcoming $75 to $100 billion initial public offering, one might think Facebook is not only a highly visible company, but also one of Corporate America's most reputable.

But that's not really the case, according to the findings discovered by Harris Interactive. The company recently conducted its 13th annual Reputation Quotient Study, which measures companies' reputation with consumers.

In performing the survey, Harris first asked 17,000 people to chose the companies that are most visible to them on a daily basis. The respondents were then asked to rate the top 60 most visible companies on wide rage of attributes, including emotional appeal, products and services, social responsibility, vision and leadership, workplace environment and financial performance.

Apple bumped Google for the number one spot as the most reputable company in America, followed by Coca-Cola, Amazon.com and Kraft Foods. (See: Apple Ranks #1 With Consumers as J&J Tumbles in Harris Poll: Big Banks Come in Last)

But Facebook did not even make its way onto the most visible list of companies for consumers to rank, which is surprising for a company that has a shocking number of users and plans to go public. So how can this be? Well, it turns out that the public fails to recognize the social networking website as an actual corporation. Most people see Facebook rather as a tool, service or a channel for communication, says Robert Fronk, executive vice president for Harris Interactive.

While Facebook did not make the list this year, unlike last year, Harris still rated the company on its reputation. Facebook received a reputation rating bordering between fair and good, falling short of very good and excellent. The company's reputation waned in 2012 because 25% of the general public holds a negative perception of the company on a wide-rage of issues, including trust and respect. Those feelings are in line with the countless privacy concerns facing the company.

In terms of Facebook's shortcomings, here's what the study found:

  • People do not trust Facebook to do the right thing if faced with a problem.
  • People do not believe Facebook maintains high ethical standards.
  • People do not believe Facebook is sincere in its communications.
  • People do not believe Facebook is transparent in its communications.

Why does reputation matter anyway?

"One of the reasons companies want to build reputation is so that they can over time build equity so that when a crisis comes along, when they need to influence a particular stakeholder they have build up some of that equity," says Fronk. "And right now Facebook has an equity gap."

As mentioned, Facebook is set to go public in the coming months. But it turns out that only 7% of the general public would purchase shares in the company. Seventeen percent said they definitely would not. And 0% of the general public would recommend the stock to someone else.

"When you are going to be a public corporation there is a burden on you, there is an expectation for you to communicate a little bit more," says Fronk. "What the public is looking for are companies who communicate sincerely, with a certain amount of transparency and honesty and on those measures right now Facebook also has a serious gap."

Tell us what you think! Do you think Facebook has a good reputation? Would you buy stock in the company?

Got sick of Facebook's arrogant attitudes about personal data, so I killed my account. It is hard now to keep in touch with distant friends, but I felt as if I had sold my soul to the Facebook devil for a couple of pennies every time I posted something.

Perhaps if more people killed their accounts, Facebook might rethink their obnoxious attitude about their user base.

I got rid of my account 6 months ago. I don't miss it a bit.

True dat. I do like the convenience of keeping in touch with long distance friends but hey, if you're NOT going to protect my info, and you're just going to leave my information floating around.. then count me out.

I got off Facebook, not because of the obnoxious attitude of Facebook, but most of the people that use it.

One important reason Facebook's reputation doesn't rate well is because they make their money by spying on their users and reporting the results back to advertisers so they can better target their ads to a more specific target market. Its not like Google doesn't do the same thing but users haven't so readily recognized it.

These days everbody should pretty much take it for granted that anything they do that results in a paper or electronic trail is getting tracked by someone. Your credit and debit cards are doing the same thing Facebook and Google are.

That being said, FB does suck...

A couple of years back when FB made public all hidden profile information, I've been getting spammed by advertisers ever since. Zuck said at the time he thought all information should be made available. Why not? what a revenue stream he created with advertisers. That move was Coprorately UNETHICAL since identity theft is what it is. I've been told Zucks business card reads "because I'm the CEO #$%$Yeah I think FB is going to Cheyrnoble.

I DO NOT CARE if facebook sales all the info on my facebook account, I'm not dumb enough to put anything of value on there. When my daughter was young I sat down with her and explained what info to not put online and why. People are mad at facebook because facebook does not stop them from being dumb.

Omgz i keep gettin spam in my email inbox too from stuff i've never even heard of ever since i joined fb! I checked my email today and my spam folder had 127 unread emails in it! I deleted all the spam in my spam folder just a few days ago!!!

Once FB has your info, they do NOT delete it. Europe has proven that. Unfortunately ALL corporations are in cahoots with FB now. Everyone wants your info. "They" now use your IP Address.

The only way to be safe nowadays is to stay off the internet entirely.

My son was just telling me how he thinks that Facebook is quickly losing steam . I don't like Facebook because of all the viruses and ads . Half of the ads are phishing scams and spyware .

so, for those of us who don't like FB, are there better alternatives? I like the idea of finding old friends but none of the other stuff, no need for time lines blah yada whatever.

Spending an entire day filling some servers somewhere with the boring minutae of your life has no value, so why should FB be worth a dime in the end?
    • Manly HA 3 months ago
It is hard to see now but some day all that very personal information will be of great value to businesses and governments for economic and political reasons. There will be a super program that will analysis all that data and present to all that want to take advantage of you and are willing to pay for that opportunity. Their revenue sources are almost unlimited. Facebook will surely become the most profitable and largest company in the world.

I am convinced that a person's FB profile isn't who they really are - rather it is the profile of the person they want everyone to think they are. It is a way for people to show that they are interesting and have meaningful lives. You want a meaningful life? - log off your device, go for a run, spend some time with your kids, and kiss your wife goodnight....far more fulfilling in MY-Book - not Facebook!!

Not only would I not buy or recommend Facebook stock, I will not use or recommend the use of Facebook. It has strayed far to far away from its original purpose. Now it's only purpose is to make money for Zuckerberg and a crowd of vultures. Users are mere grist for the cash generation mill.

845 Million users... I doubt that! I have 3 accounts myself. One real and 2 Fake. I think FB is overstating the actual number of users. They should clean house on fake names and then show us what they have left. Thoughts?
